The twitter URL shortening used to shorten links with bit.ly automatically. However, it has recently stopped it.
The issue is twofold:
1. While tweeting about the page, anything we enter in the tweet box is ignored and the text already entered is tweeted.
2. The URL of the page is not automatically shortened via bit.ly service.
According to a post (and many others) (http://www.addthis.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35714) on AddThis forum, the URL shortening article at https://www.addthis.com/help/url-shortening said “AddThis will automatically shorten links shared to Twitter if they are longer than 40 characters using bit.ly”.
However, this is not present anywhere in the documentation now.
The current version of documentation states “To configure our URL shortener to use your bit.ly account, you need to provide us with your bit.ly login and API Key which you can retrieve from https://bitly.com/a/settings/advanced. Once you have that, sign in to AddThis, go to the profile settings page and select the profile you'd like to link to your bitly account. In your profile settings you'll find a form that lets you enter your bitly login and API key.” However, there is no form present on the Profile Page for linking AddThis account to Bit.ly account.
I am using the addthis_button_twitter button.
