Best Practices

Make sure you get the newest version of AddThis and register for analytics. If you've already done this, check out the best practices below.

AddThis Placement

AddThis does not have any rules about where you place the button. You can put it where ever you want, but we do have some suggestions to help you increase sharing and engagement:

Do's

• Pick a prominent position
• Keep AddThis near the top of the page
• Place sharing near the content being shared
• Use personalization with service icons

Dont's

• Don't put sharing in the navigation
• Avoid putting sharing in the footer
• Avoid putting sharing below the fold
• The sidebar is not optimal for sharing

Examples of Successful Sharing

Here are some more examples of sites that have followed some best practices. Hopefully they can give you some ideas and inspiration.

Optimize AddThis Script to Load Faster

To improve the performance of AddThis and your site, you should only load the script once per HTML page, even if you have multiple buttons. Cut and paste the javascript portion from your code into the <HEAD></HEAD> of your web page. This way, the AddThis script is only loaded once.

<head>
 <script type="text/javascript">
 var addthis_config = {"data_track_clickback":true};
 </script> <script type="text/javascript"
 src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=[YOUR PROFILE ID]"></script>
</head>

<body>
 . . . . .
 <!-- AddThis Button BEGIN -->
 <div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style addthis_32x32_style">
 <a class="addthis_button_preferred_1"></a>
 <a class="addthis_button_preferred_2"></a>
 <a class="addthis_button_preferred_3"></a>
 <a class="addthis_button_preferred_4"></a>
 <a class="addthis_button_compact"></a>
 </div>
 <!-- AddThis Button END -->
</body>
